General dental care

We want to reduce the burden of dental caries

Tooth decay is a disease in which bacteria stick to plaque, feed on the sugars contained in food debris of a normal diet, excrete acid, and gradually dissolve the teeth. In fact, during the early stages of tooth decay, there is no pain and no subjective symptoms. Therefore, when you feel pain or a stinging sensation, it has actually progressed considerably. Early treatment is essential to protect your irreplaceable teeth and I insist that you come to the clinic as soon as possible if you notice even something minor. Be at ease that Smile Hills Dental Practice NAKAMEGURO will look at things from a patient’s perspective and provide safe and secure treatment.
Please feel free to contact us to protect your precious teeth.

Reducing the burden on patients by use of electric anesthesia

I believe that many people think that the pain of anesthesia comes from the insertion of the needle. However, the cause of the pain is not only from the needle, but also the pressure and temperature it takes to put the medicine in. Smile Hills Dental Practice NAKAMEGURO has introduced electric anesthesia to further reduce the burden on patients even if it is marginal. In short it allows us to inject the mediation at the same constant speed and amount, thereby resolving the issue of pain caused by pressure. In addition to surface anesthesia, it is also possible for people with strong fear to receive treatment in combination with nitrous-oxide anesthesia (laughing gas).

Wave One Gold system to facilitate root canal treatment

Compared to a regular endodontic file, which is very time-consuming and may require multiple visits, we use a Ni-Ti rotary file that significantly shortens the shaping time due to having a higher cutting efficiency. Often times we can complete the treatment in one or two visits.

Preventive dental care

Do you know the difference between whitening and cleaning?

Cleaning removes the stains from teeth (the color of the original teeth), and whitening bleaches the teeth to become brighter (changing to the original color to a whiter shade). To go into a little more detail, cleaning removes stains and tartar deposited on the surface of the tooth and whitening breaks down the pigment of the tooth which yellowed by age or heredity and whitens the tooth.

What’s the difference between insurance cleaning and out-of-insurance cleaning?

・Polishing

・Fluoride coat

The decisive difference between insurance and out-of-insurance cleaning is that insurance is for symptoms and out-of-insurance is for prevention.
Insurance practice is originally for treating diseases. For this purpose, it is necessary to diagnose periodontal disease and gingulitis by examination and X-ray. Therefore, it is not possible to remove tartar without examination. Essentially the cleaning of the teeth is done under the pretext of treatment for periodontal disease.
“Would it be possible to also treat the tooth discoloration?” This is a frequent asked question by a patient. Basically, discoloration is not a disease, so it is stipulated by the insurance that discoloration removal should be done at your own expense. On the other hand, there is no rule that tartar removal requires examination or X-ray on out-of-insurance medical care. In the case of out-of-insurance, we can follow our own clinic policy. Therefore, out-of-insurance medical care is also called free medical treatment. In addition, “teeth cleaning” is mainly tartar removal in insurance treatment, and in many cases it is not possible to finish it all in one visit. In the case of out-of-insurance care, all teeth can be cleaned in one session to the patient’s needs, from the tartar removal to the PMTC and the tooth pack.

In our clinic, maintenance according to GBT is available.

GBT(Guided Biofilm Therapy) is a new “periodontal disease treatment and maintenance” system that is different from conventional periodontal disease treatment and tooth surface cleaning.

We treat periodontal disease and maintain teeth by thoroughly removing biofilms, stains, and tartar by using the Swiss-made “Airflow Prophylaxis Master” equipment.
※”Airflow Prophylaxis Master” is the only airflow in the world that can do GBT.

Unlike traditional ultrasonic tartar removal and PMTC cleaning, GBT reduces the use of hand instruments, and airflow reduces invasiveness to dental tissues such as dentin, cement, enamel, and gums, resulting in strong and long-lasting teeth.

In addition, by dyeing the mass (biofilm) of pathogens so that they can be seen, it is easy for patients to understand their oral condition and at the same time for the dental hygienist to remove the biofilm. GBT makes it easier for people to keep their cavities in check and prevent periodontal disease.

The purpose of GBT
  • Removal of biofilm, which houses bacteria
  • Prevention of cavities and maintaining healthy teeth
  • Discovery of early cavities
  • Cleaning around the crowns
  • Cleaning around the implant

Premium PMTC Flows

  1. Increasing biofilm visibility through special dyes
(visualizes the bacterial membrane called biofilm)
  2. Air Flow
(Removes biofilm, stains, and developing tartar)
  3. Removal of surface tartar
  4. Removal of tartar under the gum line
  5. Professional Mechanical Teeth Cleaning and Enamel Packs
(After polishing the surface of the tooth, the surface of the tooth called enamel is smoothed with a treatment paste.)
  6. Fluorine coating
  7. If necessary, we will provide toothbrush and floss guidance that is right for each patient.

What’s the difference from traditional maintenance?

Minimally invasive

It is especially recommended for those who have felt discomfort in the removal the tartar up to now. It does not scratch dentin, crowns, or implants.

Focusing on biofilm

In the previous year, traditional practices have been prioritizing the removal of tartar, but GBT focuses on biofilm. This is because biofilm causes tooth decay and periodontal disease. It has been reported that periodontal disease, cardiovascular disease and diabetes are related to each other. In addition, elderly people are at increased risk of aspiration pneumonia due to biofilm.

What is biofilm?

Biofilm is a viscous bacterial membrane in which multiple bacteria coexist, which attaches to the surface of an individual. A similar analogy would be the slime in a drain or the triangular corner in a kitchen. All of these bacteria grow in water to form biofilms, and because they adhere strongly, they cannot be removed simply by the splashing of water. This biofilm is also formed on the teeth, and there are many bacteria that cause tooth decay and periodontal disease contained in it. In order to get rid of this, it is important to brush your teeth on a daily basis and receive regular professional care from your family dentist. There are about 200 million bacteria in 1mg of biofilm. When these bacteria enter the lungs due to aspiration, the risk of aspiration pneumonia increases, and they can enter organs in the body through the gum vessels. These bacteria will slowly consume the whole body and induce various diseases. People with periodontal disease are said to experience 2.8 times more heart attacks, 3.0 times more strokes and cerebral infarctions, and 7.5 times more likely to have premature births than those with healthy oral cavities. Aspiration pneumonia ranks high in the mortality rate in Japan. In elderly people with reduced swallowing function, it often develops during sleep, making it easier for bacteria in the oral cavity and flowing gastric fluid to enter the trachea by mistake and develop aspiration pneumonia.

In order to reduce the number of bacteria in the mouth, oral care such as tartar removal is effective to remove bacteria adhering to the teeth.

The mouth is the first entrance point where the body is in contact with the outside world. Maintaining a healthy mouth leads to the prevention of diseases throughout the body.

About Out-of-Insurance Treatment
Dental Implant Treatment

Unlike dentures or bridges, dental implants will result in a natural chewing feeling and the beautiful appearance will be restored.
In the place of the lost tooth, an artificial tooth root is placed in your jawbone with an artificial tooth/crown installed on the dental implant.
There is no need to touch your other healthy teeth.

Single tooth dental implant treatment ranges from ¥ 200,000.- to ¥ 500,000.-, with an additional surgery cost of ¥100,000.- to ¥300,000.- if needed.
If there is adequate width and height of the bone for the implant area, there will be no additional costs. Unfortunately, it is common for the bone to be missing or deficient in shape and size where the tooth has been extracted. Bone grafting may be necessary, which will increase the cost of treatment.

There are also some other complications and risks linked to dental implants such as:
  • Nerve injury: This causes pain, numbness or paresthesia in the surrounding tissues (e.g. teeth, gums, lips or chin)
  • Tissue necrosis: The cells in the flap of tissue around the implant may die (approximately 1 in 20 cases).
  • Gingival recession: The gingiva next to the dental implant may recede to expose the metal abutment that holds the prosthetic in place.
  • Excessive bleeding
  • A dental abutment or an artificial tooth might get loose after installment.

As well as your natural tooth, without proper maintenance it is possible for the bone around the dental implant to lose bone mass. We highly recommend a typical maintenance visit scheduled every three months to ensure proper care.

Cosmetic dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry is generally used to refer to any dental work that improves the appearance of teeth, gums and/or bite.
Our clinic utilizes metal free all ceramic and zirconia inlays, crowns, and bridges so your gums will not blacken. We also whiten your teeth to that of a natural color so that your teeth do not appear mismatched. A healthy appearance will allow for a confident and true smile. We want to give you more options so you can find one that suits you the best.

Price range 10,000 – 300,000 JPY
(*It depends on a treatment)

Complications and Risks
  • 【Teeth Whitening】
The two side effects that occur most often with teeth whitening are a temporary increase in tooth sensitivity and mild irritation of the soft tissues of the mouth, particularly the gums.
  • 【All ceramic crowns】
Ceramic crowns are not as strong and durable as metal inlays/crowns.
  • 【All ceramic inlays】
We need to drill your tooth more so than with a metal inlay because of the proper thickness needed.
  • 【Laminate Veneer】
It cannot be used for your back teeth. It may come off depending on your bite problem.
  • 【Metal ceramic crowns】
It is less aesthetically pleasing than all ceramic crowns because it has metal inside. After a certain period of time, aging or traumatic brushing will cause the metal skeleton to show and the gumline will turn slightly grey.
